Matthew CP#2

I met Sung in the CIES lounge on Friday July 5th. Our original plan was to meet there and then I would show him around campus, as he only arrived from South Korea a week ago and didn't know his way around. Unfortunately it was a devilish combination of both hot and rainy (thanks Florida) outside so we decided staying in the lounge and having some tea was much more preferable. I asked him about what he had studied going to college in Korea and told me he had dual majored in Business Management and Japanese Language. This led naturally to his travels around Japan, and most notably how the local beer in Sapporo is the best. One subject that I asked him many questions about was his mandatory service in the South Korean army, because I was very curious about this. He expressed a desire to see many of the hot spots around Tallahassee so we discussed a number of restaurants and bars that we could visit next time.

  1. Interesting Matthew,
the part regarding the mandatory military service. Did Sung seem to have any strong feelings about the military in South Korea? I was unaware that Asian countries shared with Europe the mandatory military service laws. I am curious to know how long the individual's service must last.

    1. South Korean males are required to serve 2 years in their choice of military service branch iirc.

  2. Adam's right! =) BTW, Max, please change your title from your tutee's name to your name; that's going to make it easier to count how many tutoring/cp meeting sessions you have had. =)

  3. Max,
I think it is a great idea to show him around Tallahassee. What better way to get to know someone, have fun and practice English.
