Lauren TP#3

Today for the first time I met with Jason, a little Korean boy. Immediately I could tell we were going to have a great time. For this tutoring session I brought a game called Apples to Apples, which is a word games where kids have to match nouns with the appropriate adjectives. We started off playing this game to loosen up because I did not want Jason to feel uncomfortable.

At another table sat Jason's cousins and sister. They ended up joining us for the game and Jason explained to me that one of his cousins was visiting from Korea and was hoping to learn more English too. The game ended up being a great tool because for the most part the kids didn't know a lot of the nouns and adjectives on the cards, and I ended up explaining most of them. By the second round of the game the kids had learned a lot of words. I organized the cards so that we only went over easy words, and next session we'll do even harder ones.

After a round of playing the game Jason brought out a stack of books that he had picked out and I read one of them to the group. It was a book they were familiar with but one in which they were mispronouncing a lot of the words in. The book ended up being very long so we only got through half of it. The kids were so polite and sat silently while I read.

After I read from the book we played some more Apples to Apples. When Jason's father came by we spoke for a little and he told me that he worked here at FSU. He also expressed interest in having his niece learn English and continuing our tutoring sessions even after I complete my TEFL certificate. I gladly agreed, the kids were so sweet and eager to learn. For next time, I told them to bring in any homeowrk they needed help on. As far as grammar and speaking goes, their English is almost perfect, but by playing word games I was able to explain any words they didn't know.

  1. Apples to Apples is a great idea to keep the children entertained while teaching them new vocabulary. I have never played the game but it sounds fun!
