Sally
I met with Sally for the second time. I think that after
this session I really learned her learning style. This week I had more of a
creative and interactive lesson and she seemed to not like it as much. I really
think she preferred having actual worksheets where there was a right and wrong
answer. For our next sessions I am going to have a better balance. Maybe I will
bring a worksheet along with something more creative so she will have some
actual work to show her progress while still doing something more fun.
She had mentioned in our last session that she liked to read
and one of her favorite books is The
Hunger Games. I liked that book too so for this lesson I decided to use it.
The activity was to talk about and write events in the story and then use
adjectives from a list of example adjectives that describe the character in
that part. I had the feeling the huge list was overwhelming so I would circle a
few words and ask her which of those three she thought worked best and why.
She was pretty shy which made it hard to come up with things
at first. After we did Katniss, I chose President Snow because describing him
would let us use totally different words. I liked the lesson because it was a
good way to learn vocabulary in context. We also went over guessing the meaning
of words based on suffixes and prefixes. Before we ended the session we did a
Mad Lib about getting abducted by aliens.
