Matthew CP#1

I met with Sultan on Tuesday, July 2nd, for the first time. There was a small but of confusion on trying to find each other, but luckily a name tag saved the day. We introduced ourselves and Sultan told me that he was from Kuwait and was going to be studying Chemical Engineering. A very impressive subject. The conversation drifted over the normal subjects like food and travel, but things really kicked off when the subject of video games popped up. We spent most of the conversation discussing our favorite games and how we probably play them too much. We also figured a good schedule to meet and discussed some alternate places around Tallahassee to go.

  1. Matthew,
That's great that you found a topic that motivates your tutee and facilitates conversation!

  2. Max, it seems like you had a good conversation with Sultan. However, since this was your tutoring session, you need to think about how you helped him to improve his English. Did you focus on his speaking skills? Then, did you have a chance to correct his grammar or pronunciation errors? Was it a structured tutoring session, or was it just like your conversation partner meeting session? Try to differentiate between tutoring sessions and conversation partner meetings. Take your tutoring sessions as a teaching opportunity.

  3. Hi Matthew,
I also have a partner from Kuwait. I'll have to keep up with your posts for ideas of things to ask him :)
