Meagan TP #2
This week, I was able to meet with my second tutee, Jarah. Jarah is a young adult student from Kuwait and is currently trying to prepare himself for the IELTS exam. If he passes the exam with a high score, he will be able to apply and study in any English-speaking University in America or abroad. Jarah is very strong in speaking and grammar. However, he has a long way to go in writing and spelling, which is normal as trying to convert from Arabic to English is not the easiest process ever. On our first meeting, we spent an hour describing different types of graphs with at least 150 words. For the writing portion of his exam, he has two tasks (one: describe a graph, two: choose an argument) and 40 minutes each to complete them. Therefore, practicing his writing and comprehension skills are crucial to his success on the exam and his academic career in an English-speaking nation. He was able to successfully describe a bar graph of how many goals were scored per round in the World Cup. Though, he had difficulty with setting-up his passage, transition words, and writing with proper sentence structure. For our next session, we will attempt another easy graph to write about while practicing these concepts more in depth before moving on to more difficult graphs and the second task. I will encourage him to use more extensive vocabulary as well since his was able to understand and use higher vocabulary words like, "exemplify", "fluctuation", ""observation", and "prediction"in this first session.
