Meagan TP #1

My first tutoring session was held last week with my young tutee Jeffrey Kang.  The cutest five year old in the world, I am so elated to be his English tutor. However, ten minutes into our first meeting, I realized just how difficult it is to teach someone the very basics of a language that is still so new and foreign to them.  Furthermore, I am so inexperienced myself, that I have to do intense research to figure out how to teach Jeffrey in an exciting, but effective way.  Jeffrey has strong speaking skills for his age, however reading, spelling, and grammar are a huge challenge.  My goal for our next session is to focus on his speaking skill in order to strengthen his grammatical skills.  I would like to implement activities that focus heavily on Marvel Comics Superheroes, as this is his favorite thing to talk about. From there, I can sneak in ways for him to practice saying grammatically correct and complete sentences. I hope by the next couple of sessions, we can try to apply this method to reading and eventually spelling.

  1. That is great you are incorporating something he is interested in! Maybe you could find some comics that are only partially filled in or something, that way he would be writing sentences but it could still be a fun and creative activity.
