Lauren TP#2

Friday I met up with Toshie for our second tutoring meeting. After speaking with her last time I was very prepared for this meeting At our first meeting she expressed a lot of concern over passing the TOEFL so I went home and printed out some practice sheets.

We started out this tutoring session with the TOEFL practice. I printed out practice for the reading session which was followed by a bunch of practice questions to answer. Throughout the reading Toshie asked me to explain a few words to her. Some of the words were needed to be explained, because the definition could not be well explained from the dictionary. For example, the phrase "the fabric of society" and the verb "weave" were used. while weave is often used to describe weaving a basket, the usage in the text needed to be explained.

Last session I asked Toshie to bring in any homework she was having trouble with, and together we read a few articles that had a lot of American sayings in them. We mostly reviewed old homework assignments that she had not understood words on. While having a very clear grasp on vocabulary, Toshie needed a little bit of explination on the meanings of some words.

Toshie thought that the reading practice helped her a lot, and with a native speaker by her side she was able to ask for clarification on anything she was confused about. I think I'll bring more reading practice for our next meeting since Toshie found it to be so helpful!
