Abdul
Abdul and I continued working on phrasal verbs. Today we
started phrasal verbs in which the verb and adverb or preposition cannot be separated.
Some examples are to call on someone or to go through all of something. Today I
could see that Abdul was not feeling the session. He kept saying he was tired
and was frequently going off topic and I had to keep reeling him in. I also
noticed that he was making more mistakes than usual which was probably because
he wasn’t focusing. It is normal for him to make grammatical errors when coming
up with new examples but he was making spelling errors with words I know he
knows such as writing tooke instead
of took.
Despite how I am making it sound it was, overall, a
productive session. We got through about 15 verbal phrases which about what we
usually cover in a session. He was really trying it was just one of those days.
We spoke a little more about pronunciation because he asked me to help him with
the word literally. He actually had
to correct my pronunciation. He said,
“You’re saying that with a d sound,
it’s a t sound.” He is so right! It’s
another reminder that when in an ESL or EFL setting I need to constantly be actively
monitoring my speech.
