I met Bayasgalan on Wednesday at 4. This time, he said hi first and asked me about my family and friends. I was so happy because he didn't look nervous and shy. (Finally he feels comfortable with me!!) He looked very excited and happy. Still, he was not able to explain what he wanted to say, but he kept telling me about many different stories about his school experiences in Mongolia. He explained the school system of Mongolia. Mongolia and America had a same system and it was pretty surprising to me because I thought it would be same as Korea.
Then again, he asked me to study grammar with him, so we studied Nouns and Pronouns. I gave him a lot of examples and made him to distinguish the two. (He was very goot at it:))
He asked me about some expressions that native Americans use, and I wasn't be able to explain them well because I didn't really know the exat meaning of the expressions! (Help me guys!:P)
The expressions were "Just chilling." or "What's up?" I wasn't expect to be asked those questions, so I didn't have him understand those, but next time, I will have him ask people at starbucks! I think it will be a good activity.
For "just chilling" you could tell him that is slang for "I am okay" or "I am not doing much," or that "what's up?" is informal slang for "how are you doing?"

ReplyDeleteI was also helping him with nouns and pronouns when I tutored him a few days ago. I am glad to hear he is clear on the difference. Is he still struggling with understanding what pronouns should be used when? ("him" vs. "he" vs. "his"?) If so that is something we could both work on when each of us next talk to him.
