My
conversation partner’s name is Abdulgader, but he wants to be called gader. He
is from the country of Libya. He showed me pictures of his country and it is beautiful. We also talked about some of his favorite foods from
his country and where he has been in Tallahassee. He said he is not a huge fan
of the rain; it does not rain often during the summer in his country. He told
me he likes to watch the show Friends to help him with English, so I told him I
have the seasons and can give him some episodes. He wants to practice talking,
but he doesn’t like to speak a lot. He would rather listen to me talk. I think
he is uncomfortable because he believes he cannot speak English well however,
he speaks quite well. Throughout the session I made sure to tell him he is
doing well and that he shouldn’t be nervous because he is saying everything
correctly. He only made a couple of pronunciation errors. For example, when he
was talking about food from his country one of the ingredients is flour, but he
was pronouncing it like floor.

Good job reinforcing that he is doing well and you are only there to help him, not judge his mistakes. Remember that effective filter :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Hayley, Krashen's affective filter hypothesis is an "effective" approach. ;)
