Lindsey TP#7

Yesterday Zeb and I met with the Hong twins again. This time, he took Matthew and I took David. David was surprisingly well-behaved - I was pretty convinced that they'd switched and I had Matthew! First we read the first chapter of Frindle, a pretty popular book for second and third graders. Halfway through the chapter he seemed tired of reading so I asked if he wanted me to read, and he said yes. I asked him a few questions throughout, and at the end if he thought it seemed interesting at all. (He said yes, but I don't know if you was just being nice/trying to get me to move on.) Next we played hangman. I wanted to find a game he liked to get him more comfortable around me. First I thought of a sentence, which he eventually guessed. Then it was his turn (which he was pretty excited about) and I told him to make sure it was difficult for me. Obviously then he came up with really long sentence with large words! I forget exactly what it was, but it was funny how excited he was to come up with a sentence once he got competitive about it! Next time I think we'll play again, but with a more specific rule about what to include in the sentence (e.g. an irregular verb, or a word with a spelling change in the plural). Next I went over a worksheet (the same that I'd used with Matthew the week before) about the simple past tense. Just as he was getting bored, Zeb and Matthew came over to our table to play Uno for a break. The game ended up going longer than expected (next time we should take out half of the cards, or something). For the next 10 or 15 minutes we worked on verbs more (with a worksheet that we had been in the middle of before Uno). It only took a minute for David to ask if he had to do all of them, and since I only really wanted to do the worksheet to see what he needed help with, I asked him how many of the problems he wanted to do. He pointed to 3/4 the way down the page and said that he would end there (which was way more than I expected!). We did those, and since he had trouble with a few and we had a couple of minutes left, I asked him to write a sentence using each of the ones he didn't know yet. He did a good job with those and then ran over to his brother to fight over a pop-up book :)

  1. Good call on using hangman, I hadn't thought of that! it's really important to keep it fun with the young ones, since they don't have much intrinsic motivation for learning.
