After
our initial meeting, my TP and I met at his apartment and we discussed pretty
much everything that he had questions about.
He is an advanced English learner from the conversations we had the
first day we met, but he just asked me to help him learn certain nuances,
slangs and social aspects in English conversation. So when we met, he asked me about
alliteration. He saw alliteration in
articles, books and in social media, but we was not sure of what the purpose
for it was or the label that was put towards the literary device.
I
explained to him that what he saw was called alliteration and that we use it to
help remember things, it is also a marketing technique and it also give the
language some flavor. He told me he
understood the literary aspect, but he didn’t understand the flavor
aspect. So I told him the ‘sally sells seashells
by the seashore’ phrase and he quickly lit up and laughed in
understanding. We then talked about
sentence structure and he asked me why Americans say gunna, shoulda, wanna, etc
and I told him that it is because of sheer laziness and that we are just
wanting to get the message across very quickly so that we can get on with our
day. He laughed again and told me that in
Brazil they do the same thing as well.
We further discussed about the Brazilian economy and coffee and then I
left.
