Lauren TP#12

Today I met Toshie again. We met up in the CIES lounge then ended up going into an empty classroom so she could hear the listening exercise I picked out for this meeting. For this week I had picked out a clip to listen to that showed a British accent. I was a little weary at first because I didn't want the accent to confuse her. As it turns out, she actually thought it was easier! I was very surprised. I asked her if she noticed the accent at all; she didn't.

The listening practice was a lecture for a business class. It explained the different types of business ownership. After answering some questions about the clip we went over the answers and corrected her mistakes. We listened again after making corrections. Upon hearing the clip for a second time, Toshie pointed out many of her own mistakes.

I was surprised that Toshie thought that the British accent was easier. This makes me unsure whether I should present it more or less. I want to expose her to different accents but still hope to challenge her. This lecture topic was an easier topic to relate to than the ones before. Though I do think she understood more, Toshie still struggle with the detailed questions.

After working on listening practice Toshie brought out the rough draft of a paper she is writing. Her main issue was constant repetition. She was constantly using "if" to start every sentence. Her teacher gave her a chart of other conditional terms to use so we swapped some "if"s out for those. I had to explain a few terms like "in the event of" and "on account of". Some of the terms on her worksheet I had never seen, so I just pointed out the most common ones and explained those.

Toshie is always really honest with me. she always tells me when she doesn't understand something. I'm lucky that I never have to guess what she is thinking. Unfortunately tomorrow will be our last meeting. She has been so great, it bums me out to have to say goodbye! We will definitely still keep in touch.
