Today Maria and I met up again at the public library. Our next session is our last and we have 4 chapters left in Stargirl so we read two aloud. Usually we read aloud for 15 minutes first. Next, I ask Maria to summarize what we have just read. After that I ask her critical thinking questions that I have gotten from Scholastic.com.
Here is a link to the questions I use:

Then we read for another 15 minutes and repeat.
At first I was the only one reading but lately I've been having her read the first and last page of each chapter. This week's reading is particularly interesting because we have reached a pivotal point in the book. At this point in the book the protagonist has stopped trying to become popular. This spurred a great conversation. Maria talked quite a bit about how people should not pretend or try to be someone that they are not.
This book is great for students of this age because it sends a great message. Maria and I talked a lot about how the students in the book reacted to the protagonist's transformation. Maria is usually pretty shy so I have to ask direct questions to really get her going.
Our next meeting unfortunately will be our last. Lana has been asking me about meeting some more throughout the year but I am worried that I won't be able to since I'll have to take a full course load in the fall. I don't mind meeting up weekly before that. Lana and I have yet to set a schedule for after I complete the tefl course. Everything is tentative thus far.
