Jeffrey and I's last tutoring session before our vacation break was last Wednesday, August 7th. Our conversation began on his plans in Orlando. His family and he will be visiting Universal Studios for a whole week. He said his was the most excited for meeting the Marvel heroes in person and going on all the rides. I asked him to take as many pictures as possible, so he could share them to me at our next tutoring session. Then, we began to review the Ninjago book Jeffrey checked out yesterday. I quizzed him with fun questions like, "Which ninja is your favorite and what is their power?" and "If you were apart of the Ninjago masters, what kind of ninja would you be?" We went on to discuss how the book's plot was about the fire ninja, Kai, and his mission to save his fellow ninja from the evil enemies, Skelators. I had Jeffrey spell a few words from the book as well that he remembered, in which he only needed help on remembering a couple letters from the words Ninja and Fire.
For the rest of the lesson, we practiced writing and spelling more words. That day, he wanted to talk and read about Hockey. Hockey is one of the sports he likes, in addition to racing cars. We found three good books on Hockey and I chose a couple words from each for him to spell aloud and then write. He was able to spell: score, puck, goal, and stick. As for reading, he had trouble on the longer words like, scoring, shooting, training, and skating. So I helped him break the words down by covering each half so he could have an easier time pronouncing the first and last parts of the word, then sounded out the letters for him to hear and mimic. Once he grasped the words, we practiced the same sentences a few times over until he became comfortable with the pronunciation. Since we have started to meet a few weeks ago, I noticed Jeffrey is not afraid to try reading longer sentences (with at least 6-7 words) and can spell words with up to five letters with only a couple tries (depending on the letters incorporated in the word). That being said, it is very exciting when we read or spell as Jeffrey can usually master two new words, and he is happy to get a sticker as a reward.
We wrapped-up with story-time (as a listening activity) from another Ninjago book he chose. I read one chapter aloud and frequently stopped after every other page to question him on the topic and goals of the main character. He needed help identifying the good and bad characters of this new book, so we took time discussing each characters' motives and why. He also asked a lot of questions about the story's arch and time ran out as I explained it to him, so I helped him check it out before we left for vacation. Our next session is August 30th and I can't wait!
