Today I met with Fatima for the first time. I was a little worried about being culturally sensitive but as soon as I met her I was blown away by how cool and casual she was. Our initial meeting time was 2:15, but because of poor phone connection she thought we were meeting at 2:50. Normally I wouldn't mind waiting up but I had a meeting with my tutoring partner at 3 so we ended up rescheduling for 4pm.
We met up in the CIES lounge, but it was too loud and everyone was eating. I said it was too loud in there and suggested we go and sit outside. This was no better. The construction made it almost impossible to hear her. We ended up sitting on the couched by the entrance to CIES.
I asked her a bunch of questions about her family. She told me that she is one of 11. She told me that pretty much everyone in her family studies either medicine or engineering. She also told me that she wished to pursue more education in bio medical engineering. She hopes to eventually take the GMAT and seems like a very dedicate student.
Fatima told me about the years she lived in Australia with her sisters. Her sisters were living there and studying medicine. She told me that they lived in a hostel, but she assured me that it was really nice. While in Australia she worked as a teachers assistant for one of the professors and said she made a lot of money. She explained to me that despite the money she wanted to leave because she didn't feel like she was being challenged.
She also told me about a stalking incident in Australia and we both laughed over it. Fatima told me a lot about her family and how open-minded they were. I am really happy that we got to meet up. Fatima was so talkative and fun that I wish we had met earlier in the summer!
