Abdul
I met with Abdul in Stozier Library. This was our first
meeting so I needed to see what he was hoping to learn and assess his skill
level. He showed me a few of his papers and overall his grammar was almost
perfect. There were a few issues with prepositions and articles but usually the
usage was correct. He also sometimes didn’t make things plural when they should
be but if I pointed at the error he immediately knew what was wrong.
He told me that he mainly wants to work on his speaking
skills. He mentioned that he only recently learned that to “take off” meant you
were going to leave. He wants to focus on English phrases and idioms,
especially those that are only used in speaking because those are the ones he
usually cannot understand. He was making grammar errors while speaking but I
only corrected some because I wanted to hear him speak and correct himself
which he would do about half of the time.
The biggest problem with his conversational skills was the
ability to clearly express an idea. I often had to ask him again what he meant
or to clarify something. I got the impression that he was not able to fully
express what he was thinking in English. For next time, I am going to make a
long list of phrases and idioms for us to discuss. I also plan to also give him more
error correction while we are talking.
