Maria, my conversation partner, had mentioned to me that she
hated the food here because she has been eating at Suwannee. So, my mom and I
cooked some dinner and brought it to her and her roommates. All of the ladies
loved talking to my mom probably because she is closer to most of their ages
than I am. Maria and the other ladies explained to my mom what they were doing
here and answered all of her questions about the program. Then we talked about
our families and looked at a ton of photos.
We had made a corn casserole that they all said was exactly
like a dish called curau. I thought
that was really interesting and it’s great that it made them feel at home. After
dinner, they gave my mom a colorful mini-umbrella that is used in dances they
do during Carnival called Frevo. We
watched some videos of it and they were awesome. The dancers wear these
colorful costumes with lots of ruffles and the music is really upbeat. The
dance is basically bouncing around and jumping, it looks so fun! It’s a really
popular dance, especially in their state. They also showed us Capoeira which is Brazilian martial arts.
It’s basically fight dancing and it was really cool to watch. I have never seen
anything like it.
All of the ladies were so gracious and excited to get a home
cooked meal. I really liked making them feel at home and I am so glad they
enjoyed themselves. I also wanted my mom to see what I have been doing the last
few weeks and I think she really enjoyed it.
That was very nice of you to bring food for your conversation partner! I think it is very cool that you introduced your conversation partner to your family in order to catch a glimpse of American family life. The more aspects of culture you can learn from each other, the better!
