Today I met my other conversation partner, Maria. Maria is
one of the many Brazilian English teachers who are taking the intensive English
course this summer. I met her at the CIES building and we walked around campus
and ended up sitting outside of Suwannee for a while. She googled her town,
Tabira and we looked at all of the pictures. She talked to me about her town
which is small and is currently having serious drought problems. I think she
couldn’t understand my speaking as well as she could speak so I mostly allowed
her to talk, that is the way to learn more anyways!
She asked me if I had a car and if it was true that most
people have their own cars, like multiple cars in each family. This was pretty surprising
to her and then she asked about the traffic here. I explained that our roads
are very good so traffic is not a problem and moves fast. The roads in Brazil
are just terrible and in the cities there is almost impossible traffic. She
said that they are taxed at 40% and still they see little to no help from
public services. I have heard a little about this because of the recent
protests in Brazil but I didn’t bring it up because we have many more meetings
to talk about all of the questions I have for her. Overall, I just wanted the
first meeting to get to know her a little bit and will save my tougher
questions for once we are more familiar.
