Today I had a group tutoring session with a brother and
sister. We went through their grammar book because they previously marked which
rules they were having trouble with. We talked about the difference between
present progressive and present perfect (was talking and have been talking). WE
also talked about sentences with the world “if” and spoken and written quotes.
After, we went over a research paper. It was emailed to me earlier, so I was
able to highlight problem areas. I informed them that I did not correct the
paper, because I thought it would be best to correct it together. I had the
students try to figure out what they problems were before I helped them. Most
of the time they saw the error and corrected it immediately, the rest of the
time they knew there was a mistake, but they couldn’t figure out how to fix it.
That is when I would explain why the subject didn’t agree with the verb or why
the preposition was incorrect. I also tried to give more examples (not from the
paper) using the grammar rules they were unsure of.
