Erika CP #2
My
conversation partner’s name is Eunira. She is one of the English teachers from
Brazil. She teaches young children in Brazil. We talked about her family, her
hometown, and her classes. She showed me some pictures of things she likes to
do in Brazil. We also talked about what it is like to be an English teacher in
Brazil. She said it is difficult because many students do not think it is an
important part of school. She also said it does not always pay very well and
that sometimes she has to teach fifteen different class in one day. She also
says that there are not enough English teachers and sometimes the schools have
to resort to having teachers that do not know English very well teach. One
thing I did notice was that when she was speaking in the future tense she
always used “I intend to” she did not seem comfortable trying to use other
words to express what she was going to do.

Erika,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post about Eurina. I am surprised to hear about the low funding and disinterest in English learning and teaching in Brazil. Perhaps, because the Portuguese language is so beautiful and Brazil is so vast, the people find no pressing need to learn English. Also, I have heard that Brazil has the widest gap of income level between the rich and poor of any country on the planet.
Hey Erika,
ReplyDeleteOne of my conversation partners is also a teacher in Brazil. She said the same things about teaching - that teachers often have to work long hours, aren't paid very much, and are sometimes pressured to teach subjects they aren't proficient in. She seems to really enjoy teaching, though, and is very happy to be here learning English to become better at what she does!
