Today I met with Maria for our last time. She only has a little bit of reading left for Stargirl. Today we finished it up and talked about the discussion questions I brought. The last part of the book was a flash forward 20 years. This spurred a great conversation. The last chapter focused partially on a High School reunion. We talked about character development and how the characters had changed over time.
Most of our sessions are discussion and reading aloud but today I brought a worksheet that explained the difference between then and than. Maria and I talked for a while about where her mom was. Usually her mom sits at the table with us and watched but Maria explained to me that today she had a friend who was getting dental work done. Lana (maria's mom), was giving her friend a ride to and from the dentist. I assume the friend was under some sort of laughing gas.
I saw that Maria had a few magazines with her and I asked her about them. One of the magazines she had with was J-14. J-14 was very popular when I was in middle school too. Lana joined us before the meeting ended. She said she was sad that this would be our last meeting. I hope that Lana tries to find Maria a new tutor because she could really benefit from that.
When it was time to say goodbye Lana kept thanking me for being a role model for Maria. I was so flattered. I told them that if Maria ever needed help with anything in the future that I would be more than happy to help. When it was time to say goodbye Maria gave me a very tight hug for a long time. I'll really miss her!
