G1 Reading - Calyn
Pre-lesson activity: She told the students about her weekend and then asked her students about their weekends. It was a reading class, but I think it was good to have a little chat with class. Also, I thought she was doing it to lower their affective filters.(Students liked to talk about themselves!) Then she reviewed the text book.
Active lesson:
1) Group discussion: Students had to write about germs in groups. While students were writing about germs, she went around the classroom to see students were doing it right.
2) Voca: Before students read the textbook, she explained some words in textbook. She had some pictures to explain the words to students. Visual aids help students memorize vocabulary.
3) Reading: First, she read the text aloud. She asked students questions about the text after, and when students didn't seem that they understood the article, she tried to explain the text one sentence by one sentence. Then later, she had students read the article aloud and correct students' pronunciation errors.
Post-lesson activity: classroom discussion and comprehension questions.
Students had to discuss the comprehension questions in time, and later she went through the questions in class together.
The class was really interactive. I was very impressed by her teaching because she was so energetic while she was teaching, and it really encouraged the students. Students liked to discuss in groups and answer questions even though they were struggling with expressing themselves. It was also a fun class!
