I met with Matthew and David Hong on Monday August 4th. We started with handwriting practice in
which the boys copy handwriting samples.
They have both improved in their handwriting skills, mostly due to
taking the time to focus on specific letters. Next, they were both excited to know what kinds of
materialistic rewards I brought for them to fulfill the token/point system we
had been working with during our sessions. I brought a giant-sized coloring book themed “Hot Wheels”,
crayons, a sketch book with color pencils, a dry-erase board, a set of
dominoes, and a couple of trinkets prized by children. The rationale behind the sketchbook and
coloring book was to provide a reward for the boys that continued their handwriting
practice. The dominoes are just
for fun.
We
agreed that during this lesson, the boys would need to work to get points in
order to see who chose the first reward.
They both agreed and we began our lesson. I have been keeping track of words they misspell, so we
started with a tic-tac-toe game in which they were asked to spell words. The boys are rather competitive, yet
generally will keep a positive attitude towards each other. We continued the lesson by practicing
using the word “therefore” or “because” in order to enhance their ability to
form complex sentences or ideas in writing.
At
the end of our lesson, they chose their prizes and left the table excited about
their rewards for participating in the English tutoring sessions.
