We talked about "why we needed to study". She told me that she had to study English and to be able to speak English fluently to get a good job in her country. It was not very surprising that she was studying English due to her future career because many people in Korea and people that I have met in the U.S. (mostly Asian people) told me that English skills are VERY important to get a job. We also talked about learning methods since I needed to know, however, she just said that she needed to take TOEFL exam and wanted for me to help her to prepare the exam. To be honest, I am not very sure how will I help her for her exam and I feel very pressured to do it because it is a standardized test which she must take to get into a university. Fortunately, I have materials for TOEFL, so I think I can help her somehow, but I need help as well to help her to be prepared for the exam.
What we are going to do:
1. Vocabulary
We will have voca quiz twice a week.
2. Listening
I am confident of helping her listening skills because for 8 months, I have been practicing TOEFL listening regularly at CIES:) What I am concerning about is how to explain the skills that I know and how to help her to be able to do the integrated task.
3. Writing
4. Speaking
Timed writing and speaking is harder when people actually do it. I will help her to be able to write her ideas and speak her opinions in time.
Even though I cannot speak french, but I don't think that it will be a problem. However, I know that it will be much helpful for me to be able to speak her language to teach her and make better communication with her.
Minseo, since she wants to improve her TOEFL score, I think you might as well use some TOEFL materials during tutoring sessions with her. You can find lots of TOEFL materials online. If you study and prepare before each tutoring session, I'm sure you can teach her! Good luck! =)
