Today I met with Bayasgalan in one of the unused classrooms of CIES (the one across from 403) a few minutes after I had met with Daehyup. He said that he was disappointed because he had failed a midterm quiz. I looked at the quiz and assessed his problems. He still had difficulty understanding the difference between simple past tense and past continuous tense. Additionally, he appeared to struggle with simple present tense and present continuous tense on his quiz as well. He also occasionally had forgotten to put an "s" at the end of verbs that follow third person pronouns.
I gave him several examples of mistakes and correct sentences on the board, and he was able to identify the correct sentences relatively easily. Because of this (and because I had explained many of these concepts to him earlier), I was confused as to why he had had difficulty with the quiz. Today he was studying simple past tense and present perfect tense. I gave him examples of ways to distinguish the two (ex. the use of the words "has" or "have"), which he seemed to catch on to pretty quickly, although he said he understood very little of it. He asked me to test him on these concepts so I wrote down sentences that demonstrated these ideas and asked him to identify them on one part of the paper and to rewrite the sentences completely on another. I told him to treat this as a take home quiz or supplementary homework that would measure his comprehension. Hopefully he will master these concepts and do well in his class.
