Adam TP # 10
Today I met with Daehyup in the CIES lounge. He said that his teacher was going over the idea of brainstorming and writing outlines. He said he had difficulty understanding what brainstorming meant. I explained that brainstorming is when you try to figure out what ideas you are going to put into your essay. I also explained how to outline an essay beforehand. I asked him if he comprehended the idea, and he said yes. While I was helping Daehyup with outlining essays, his teacher stopped by the lounge and told him he needed to better organize his ideas in writing. I said hello to his teacher and introduced myself, so we talked for a few seconds before Daehyup's teacher left the lounge. Daehyup said that in addition to outlining and brainstorming essays, he also needed help with conversation. He did not seem confident about speaking English. He mentioned that no one in his family spoke English. I told him that speaking more than one language gave him an advantage compared to the rest of his family (who do not speak English), and that his family must be very proud of him for being in the United States to study English intensively. We finished our tutoring session by practicing conversation, and I asked if it was okay if I corrected his errors. He said yes, so we practiced a conversation about Seoul, South Korea and I would occasionally stop to correct his speech errors, most of which were grammatical.
Hi Adam,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your experience. I especially like how you asked your tutee if you could correct his errors, rather than assume anything. That is good for a very assertive person like me to hear and learn from.
