DJ TP#9 Class
Today, I presented my cultural lesson class. One thing I noticed before the class(while observing) was that the students really enjoyed these classes! After a class I was observing had ended, the students asked each other: "Do you know if there are any more culture lessons today?" The class I gave was on video game culture in America. It was a listening and speaking class with a little bit of writing.
My students were Wayo, my conversation partner, and 4 of her friends from Korea. I started off the lesson by showing them a clip of a famous moment at a video game tournament. Then I went over the vocabulary and asked if the students could explain any of the words. Most of them were knew, so I defined them for the students. Then I asked them if they noticed any of the characters on the powerpoint, and the called out their names. The next part was simply me reading an article I had written. The class was designed to be multi-level: the lower low level students were to read a transcript of what I was saying and fill in the blanks where certain words were missing. High level students were to listen and take notes. At the end of the class, I asked if any high level students could give a summary, but everyone chose to do the low level task. I also had some comprehension questions at the end of the class. About half of these questions they could answer, and half they had to look up.
After that, we talked for a bit about gaming culture, and I asked if they had seen anyone wearing a video game related t-shirt in public. They said they had seen people with Mario or Pikachu on their clothes before. One of the students mentioned that in Korea, they have the "World Games", which is essentially the Olympics but with video games. At the end of the lesson, the students told me they liked it, and that it was interesting.
