The last time I got to hangout with Miyamoto-san was at the International Dinner this past friday. We got to chill at the waterfront and she filled me in about her plans to move back to Tokyo for a year. Three months ago, Miyamoto-san got into a bad accident and broke her ankle, which caused her to undergo surgery. This interrupted her plans to continue live in Tallahassee and pursue her education at FSU because since then, she has had to complete therapy and move way out of town to live with a friend, as her apartment lease expired while she was in the hospital. It was definitely a hardship because she needed help taking care of Marin and traveling a long way everyday to get to CIES. Therefore, she felt the best thing for her and Marin would be to move back to Japan and take a year to save money and prepare for school. However, she was really sad to have to leave as she had the most fun in Tallahassee with CIES. So, she was trying very hard to pass her TOEFL in order to get accepted into FSU and be able to return to Tallahassee. Later that night, I emailed her some sites to help her with her application process and videos on how undergrad and grad students' experience on entering FSU.
The rest of the dinner was fabulous, as there was so much food to try from so many different cultures. Everyone kind of scattered about to make sure they could snag a plate, and Miyamoto-san's dishes (shrimp noodles and Gratin) were superb. At the end of the meal, she was rewarded her CIES certificate! It was a nice ceremony as each instructor awarded each of their own students, and every student had the opportunity to give a nice speech. Miyamoto-san thanked her teachers and everyone for allowing her and Marin to enjoy their time at CIES and in Tallahassee.
